10 Off-Leash Dog Walks & Beaches in Brisbane
Let's be honest: your dog has opinions about the lead. Mostly that it's getting between them and the good smells.
Here's the short answer. Around Brisbane, the best off-lead walks follow creeks and bayside beaches, not bush tracks. Brisbane's bushland reserves are on-lead only, and dogs generally aren't allowed in Queensland national parks or many conservation parks. So if you want room to run, head for the water.
Quick picks
| If you want… | Go to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The longest run | Woorim Beach South, Bribie Island | About 4.2km of off-lead sand |
| Close to the city | Kedron Brook Floodway, Gordon Park | About 2km of unfenced green space |
| A swim | Tuckeroo Park, Nudgee Beach, or Raby Bay, Cleveland | Designated off-lead swim areas in calm water |
| A bushwalk with an off-lead finish | Whites Hill Reserve, Camp Hill | On-lead tracks, then a dedicated dog park |
| A mudflat adventure | Sandgate foreshore | About 1km of off-lead foreshore, best at low tide |
Off-lead zones have clear boundaries, and they do change. Always check the signs when you arrive, and have a look at Brisbane City Council's off-leash dog parks map before you go.
A quick word on bush walks
True off-lead bush hikes around Brisbane are rare. That's why this guide sticks to creek corridors, bay beaches and bushland reserves with a dog park built in.

Brisbane's Northside
1. Kedron Brook Floodway, Gordon Park to Kalinga
Distance: About 2km of creek corridor | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead on the floodway
This is a long, open strip of grass on the north bank of Kedron Brook, and it's unfenced the whole way. It's flat and wide, with bins and bag dispensers along the route. That makes it ideal for dogs who like to stretch out and cover some ground.
Kick off from Kokoda Park on Tindal Street, Gordon Park, and follow the brook east. The off-lead section finishes just short of Lutwyche Road, so clip back on there.
Best for: Dogs who like to cover ground and come back when called. The bikeway crosses the creek in a few spots, so keep an eye out for cyclists. Follow the signs about creek access, too.

2. Downfall Creek Reserve, Virginia
Distance: About 1.5km loop | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead in the reserve, on-lead on the creek path back
About four hectares of shady, unfenced parkland beside Downfall Creek, with water taps and bins at each end. It's one of the bigger off-lead areas on the northside.
To make a loop, park at the end of Bilsen Road and cross the bridge into the reserve. Follow the creek off-lead to the far bridge at Jefferis Street. Then clip on for a leafy 500m stroll along the creek back to the car.
Best for: A sniff-heavy walk with a full-speed run in the middle.

3. Kedron Brook off-leash and swimming area, Tuckeroo Park, Nudgee Beach
Distance: Park visit | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead in the dog park and designated swim area
Kedron Brook meets Moreton Bay here. Tuckeroo Park has a big fenced dog park with agility equipment, and right next to it is a designated off-lead swim area in the brook.
Heads up: the old off-lead area on Nudgee Beach itself is now on-lead only. Keep the lead handy if you wander along the foreshore afterwards.
Best for: Water dogs who'd rather swim than walk.

Off-leash dog beaches on the bay
4. Sandgate foreshore, Sandgate to Shorncliffe
Distance: About 1km of off-lead foreshore | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead on the foreshore, on-lead on the paths
This is one of the biggest off-lead dog beaches near the city. It runs along the foreshore below Lover's Walk, from Second Avenue in Sandgate to Zeehan Street in Shorncliffe.
Come at low tide, when the flats open up and there's shallow water to splash through. There are no time restrictions, so sunrise and sunset walks both work. Keep the lead on along the footpath, then grab a coffee on the esplanade on the way back.
Best for: Dogs who don't mind (a lot of) mud. Pack a towel. Seriously. A Wet Dog and Co hooded towel keeps the mud on the dog, not the back seat.

5. Manly foreshore, Manly
Distance: Short beach stretch plus an esplanade stroll | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead between the rock walls
At the end of Davenport Drive, the beach between the southern and northern rock walls is a designated off-lead area. It's small and gritty rather than muddy, and it's bigger at low tide.
Pair it with an on-lead wander along the Manly esplanade past the boat harbour. You'll get sea breezes, bobbing masts and, if you're lucky, a dropped chip or two.
Best for: A laid-back weekend loop on the southeast side.

Bushland with off-lead zones built in
6. Seven Hills Bushland Reserve, Seven Hills
Distance: About 2.9km loop (Ridge Track Loop) | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: On-lead on the trails
[CHECK BEFORE PUBLISHING: confirm there is an off-lead dog park in or beside the reserve. If there isn't, replace this spot.]
About 8km east of the CBD, Seven Hills is a real patch of bush right in the suburbs. Expect eucalypt forest, paperbarks down by Perrin Creek and some good wildflowers in spring.
Best for: Dogs who need a good sniff through the bush.

7. Whites Hill Reserve, Camp Hill
Distance: Choose from 13 tracks | Difficulty: Easy to moderate | Lead: On-lead on the tracks, off-lead in the dog park
Whites Hill has 13 linked walking tracks. You can do a quick 20-minute lap or make a whole morning of it.
Walk a loop on-lead, then finish at the dog park in the south-west corner off Boundary Road. Keep an eye on the treetops, too, because koalas are often spotted here.
Best for: Mixing up the route week to week.

Moreton Bay
8. Woorim Beach South, Bribie Island
Distance: Up to about 8km return | Difficulty: Easy to moderate (soft sand) | Lead: Off-lead on the sand and in the water
This is the big one. It's about an hour from Brisbane, and the off-lead beach runs for about 4.2km south from beach access 19 at Lowry Street, Woorim. That's easily the longest off-lead walk on this list.
Off-lead means the sand and water only. Dogs aren't allowed on the dunes or in the vegetation behind the beach. There's a dog wash at the Lowry Street end. You can also start from Red Beach, but keep the lead on for the first couple of hundred metres until the off-lead signs.
Best for: Big beach days. Soft sand is a real workout, so pack plenty of water for both of you. Some sections are shared with 4WDs, so keep your dog in sight.

9. Queens Beach North, Scarborough
Distance: About 360m off-lead | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead 24/7 in the designated zone
Up on the Redcliffe Peninsula, the northern end of Queens Beach North is a permanent off-lead area. It runs from the rock groyne at the north end down to the beach access stairs near Griffith Road.
It's gritty sand rather than mudflats, so it's a cleaner spot for a swim. Keep your dog on-lead between the car and the zone.
Best for: A quick swim stop with bay views.

Redlands Coast
10. Raby Bay Foreshore Park, Cleveland
Distance: About 400m dog beach plus the foreshore path | Difficulty: Easy | Lead: Off-lead on the dog beach, on-lead in the park
The dog beach sits at the far end of the park. It has soft sand, calm water, water bowls, bags and bins.
From the carpark, follow the path through the park to the dog beach. After a swim, keep going on-lead to Raby Bay Harbour, about 1.3km away, for lunch. It's a popular spot, so get in early for a quieter paddle.
Best for: Calm-water swimmers and social pups.

Before you unclip: a quick off-lead checklist
- Recall comes first. Most of these spots are unfenced. Only let your dog off if they'll come back every time, even around bikes, kids, other dogs and wildlife.
- Lead on between the car and the zone. You'll still need a lead for the walk in. Our collars and leads are made from recycled plastic bottles and are waterproof and stink-proof, so a quick rinse after the beach is all they need.
- Check the signs, every time. Boundaries change. Nudgee Beach went from off-lead to on-lead, so don't rely on memory or old maps.
- Check the tide. Sandgate and Manly are best at low tide.
- Give the shorebirds space. Migratory shorebirds feed on the Moreton Bay mudflats. These off-lead zones exist partly to protect them, and how we behave in them is how we keep them.
- Watch for ticks. Paralysis ticks are common in bushland and long grass around Brisbane, especially in spring and summer. Run your hands over your dog after every walk, especially around the head and neck.
- Carry water. The Queensland heat is no joke. Our packable dog bowl folds down small enough for a pocket.
- Pick up after your pup. Off-lead areas are a privilege, and leaving waste behind is the fastest way to lose them.
- Bring a towel for the drive home. Between the creeks, mudflats and beaches, your dog will come back wet.
