We're Backing the Strays: Our Partnership with Freeroamchicks

At Wet Dog & Co, we've always believed dogs aren't just pets, they're family. So when we found out about two adventurers driving across Australia to change the lives of rescue dogs, there was only one thing to do: jump in and help however we could.

We're proud to be an official supporter of Freeroamchicks' campaign, Send It for the Strays, and we want to take you along for the ride.

Who Are Freeroamchicks?

Freeroamchicks is Astrid and Bec, two overlanding photographers and 4x4 content creators who left conventional careers, backgrounds in non-profit and emergency response work, to travel from Australia to Alaska with a camera in hand and a purpose in mind. They partner with non-profits and grassroots causes along the way, using photography, video, and storytelling to help organisations that don't usually get the spotlight.

Their approach is simple: get out there, meet the people and animals doing it tough, and use real, honest storytelling to create tangible change, not just likes and follows.

What Is "Send It for the Strays"?

What started as a simple three-week 4x4 trip turned into something much bigger. Astrid and Bec restored a rugged 1984 Toyota LandCruiser HJ47 from the ground up, rebuilding the engine, rewiring the electrics, and kitting it out for months off-grid, and are now taking it on a four-month journey from Melbourne, through the Simpson Desert, to Cape York and back, tackling some of Australia's toughest 4x4 tracks along the way.

When rising fuel costs threatened to derail the trip, the girls got resourceful: they picked up metal detectors and are now gold prospecting through Victoria's famous Golden Triangle to help self-fund the mission, all while still making time to visit shelters, deliver supplies, and re-shoot shelter photography and social content to help more dogs get seen and adopted.

The cause driving it all is Happy Tails Animal Rescue, a Queensland-based foster-based rescue giving abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats a second chance at life. No shelter walls, just a network of foster carers opening up their homes. Every dollar raised and every story shared through this campaign goes toward helping Happy Tails recruit more foster families, cover vet bills, and save more lives.

It's not just a road trip. It's a movement to give rescue dogs the visibility, care, and support they deserve, and we're honoured to be part of it.

How We're Getting Involved

Our contribution is simple but meaningful: we're donating Wet Dog & Co products along the way to fuel fundraising raffles, community events, and shelter moments throughout the campaign. Every product we send helps Astrid and Bec create more engagement, raise more funds, and put more good stuff directly into the hands (and paws) of dogs who need it.

As Freeroamchicks put it themselves, our team jumped in without hesitation the moment they reached out, because that's exactly what this cause deserves.
